2023 Junior Short Course Championship

On a blustery spring day the golfing kids of the SWGA district headed to the 13th Beach Short Couse to compete in the inaugural SWGA Short Course Championships. It was great to see Golf Australia, SWGA and 13th Beach Junior Committee work together to bring this event to the kids who play at all SWGA clubs.

With a full field of 72 junior golfers competing, it was great to see 17 local clubs represented and even an entrant from NZ.

The morning shotgun start was for the kids who are new to golf. Those with no handicap played a shortened course which allowed for more fun and a chance to hit the green. As always parents and helpers played a huge role in keeping the field on track and with the use of some friendly rules, lots of fun was had by all.

Members and parents also played a key role in guiding and advising our young players in the finer art of golfing etiquette and a kind word of encouragement when needed. With support like this, the future of golf is in good hands.

The afternoon saw the local young guns hitting off. With handicaps from 3 – 36 and a decent breeze it was definitely going to be on. The atmosphere was upbeat LIV style, with the tunes pumping they were out for a great fun day.

Grant Phelps, 13th Beach Chair of the Board, said of the day “I’m so pleased to see the development of our junior program. The Club have done a terrific job engaging with younger golfers, and our Short Course has proven a fabulous venue as we bring new golfers to this great game. It was a genuine pleasure seeing so many young golfers and their families enjoying 13th Beach during the championships”

Congratulations to all winners but the real winner of the day was Junior Golf in the SWGA of which 13th Beach Golf Club is a proud member.
